Opportunity to engage in cereal and potato sector sustainability projects

Members have the opportunity to get involved in tackling sustainability challenges in the UK's potato, barley, and small grain cereal sectors.
The James Hutton Institute, along with three other research institutes, is looking to partner with industry on the design and training of a cohort of 30 PhD students to create a group of tech-savvy individuals with research, practical experience and solutions for the future resilience of these crops.
The project, "Crop Innovation Centre – Skills, Technologies and Research Training" (CIC-START), is funded through a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) Industrial Landscape Award and will help industrial stakeholders to address crop-related challenges faced in their sector or organisation by designing a four-year PhD project in partnership with world-leading academics.
Each studentship is fully funded by BBSRC, including a student stipend, University fees, and a research budget worth approximately £120,000.
Industrial stakeholders are asked to provide £25,000 (excluding VAT) per project to support a programme manager and the student training programme.
For more information and to express an interest in getting involved with this work, email the James Hutton Institute's Business Development Manager Dan Langford ([email protected]) by 18 February 2025.
