Updated FIAS Standard Comes into Effect as Scheme Marks 20 Years
The Fertiliser Industry Assurance Scheme (FIAS) has introduced the FIAS 2026 Standard, replacing the 2021 edition from 1 October 2026. Developed following a comprehensive review involving Participants, auditors and industry stakeholders, the updated Standard reflects changes in legislation, audit findings and industry practice identified since the previous review, while continuing to support safety, security and traceability compliance across fertiliser manufacture, storage, merchanting and transport activities. The transition coincides with FIAS entering its twentieth year.
From today, all audits carried out under FIAS will be assessed against the revised requirements. The updated Standard introduces changes designed to improve clarity and support consistent compliance, including enhanced provisions around staff competence and training, greater recognition of digital record keeping, strengthened traceability requirements, updated fire risk assessment provisions and changes reflecting current legislative obligations, including those relating to Explosives Precursors and Dangerous Goods Safety Advisers (DGSAs).
Roberta Reeve, Technical Manager at the Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC) and FIAS Scheme Manager, said:
"The FIAS 2026 Standard reflects changes in legislation, audit findings and industry practice since the publication of the 2021 edition. The review identified opportunities to improve clarity in key areas, strengthen requirements where needed and ensure the Standard remains relevant to businesses operating across the fertiliser supply chain.
"While the core principles of safety, security, traceability and compliance remain unchanged, the updated Standard provides Participants with a clearer and more up-to-date framework against which they will be audited from 1 October."
The updated Standard also introduces certificates with a three-year validity period, while annual audits will continue to verify ongoing compliance with Scheme requirements.
Businesses certified under FIAS are encouraged to review the updated Standard and supporting guidance documents to ensure their procedures, records and staff training remain aligned with the revised requirements ahead of their next audit.
