Discover Max’s career journey at Agrovista, from working on a mixed farm to gaining experience across agronomy, distribution and the wider business. Find out what his role involves, the skills he uses and his advice for starting a career in the agricultural supply industry.

What does a normal day look like in your job?

Every day is different, and that’s the best thing. I get exposed to all areas and departments of the business. One day, I can be walking crops with our excellent agronomists, learning all aspects of their role, and the next I could be working within our distribution network.

The idea is to become a well-rounded employee who can be flexible and respond to the needs of the organisation. I see this as a huge benefit for me, as it gives me a broad understanding of our business, the wider crop protection sector and the agricultural industry.

How did you get into this role?

Although I’m not from a farming family, I have always had a keen interest in agriculture. After leaving school, I worked on a mixed arable and livestock farm, and my interest grew from there.

I knew that, for me, this was not necessarily a long-term option, but I was keen to explore what other opportunities were out there.

I spent some time with the agronomist on that farm, and that’s where I first thought about a role within this industry.

I then explored what options were available, and the unique opportunity at Agrovista to experience this new role really excited me.

What skills or qualities matter most in your job?

Flexibility within such a fast-paced environment and being highly adaptable to the needs of the organisation.

Being a people person is also important. Agricultural business is based on relationships. Anyone can learn the technical side of the industry, but being able to build relationships is key.

Lastly, a can-do attitude. Always say yes to an opportunity.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The variety of experiences is brilliant, with no day really being the same. Additionally, I get the chance to work within the countryside with some brilliant people who always have great ideas and experience to share.

What advice would you give someone thinking about this career?

Explore all your options, try new things and don’t say no to an opportunity that isn’t exactly what you want. You don’t know where it may take you.
