What does a normal day look like in your job?

A day in my job can involve weighing chemicals to be applied to trials, isolating pathogens from samples found in the field for diagnosis, and producing inoculum for glasshouse or field trials.

I also create agar plates for samples to grow on and assist trial officers in the field with assessments and harvesting.

How did you get into this role?

I transitioned from a role as a Medical Laboratory Assistant, working in an NHS histology laboratory.

What skills or qualities matter most in your job?

Attention to detail and accuracy are really important in my role, alongside good aseptic technique.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

What I enjoy most is the variety of responsibilities and how practical and hands-on the role is.

What advice would you give someone thinking about this career?

If you enjoy science but don’t like hospitals or blood, and you have a passion for the outdoors, this could be a great career for you.
