PAAG Report 2022-23

This report presents a summary of soil analysis data collated by the Professional Agricultural Analysis Group (PAAG) from samples submitted between June 2022 and May 2023. Over 140,000 soil samples were analysed across the UK, with grassland samples accounting for 57% of those identified by land use—slightly lower than the previous year.

The findings offer a general overview of soil conditions and nutrient levels:

  • Soil pH: Low pH levels were observed in 9% of arable and 12% of grassland samples. The average soil pH has increased to 6.7, primarily due to improvements in arable soils.

  • Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K): Only 10% of samples met the target levels for both nutrients—a figure that has remained consistent for 25 years. P levels were below target in 21% of arable and 36% of grassland samples, while K levels were below target in 27% of arable and 39% of grassland samples. These results suggest scope for better alignment between fertiliser use and soil nutrient status.

  • Magnesium (Mg): Low magnesium levels were found in 23% of arable samples, whereas grassland soils generally showed higher magnesium concentrations.

While the data are not statistically representative of all UK soils, they provide useful indicators of broad trends and areas for attention. The report aims to support ongoing efforts to optimise nutrient management through regular soil analysis and informed decision-making.
