PAAG Report 2021-22
This report summarises data collated by the Professional Agricultural Analysis Group (PAAG) from soil samples submitted between June 2021 and May 2022. Approximately 140,000 samples were analysed, with grassland samples representing 64% of those identified by land use.
The findings highlight several consistent trends:
- Soil pH: Low pH levels were found in 8% of arable and 13% of grassland samples. The average soil pH increased to 6.7, driven by improvements in arable soils.
- Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K): Only 11% of samples met the target indices for both nutrients—a figure that has remained stable for nearly 30 years. P levels were below target in 18% of arable and 32% of grassland samples, while K levels were below target in 27% of arable and 39% of grassland samples.
- Magnesium (Mg): Low magnesium levels were observed in 24% of arable samples, compared to 3% in grassland, indicating a potential need for supplementation in some cropping systems..
While the dataset is not statistically representative of all UK soils, it offers a useful overview of broad patterns in soil nutrient status. The report supports the continued use of regular soil analysis to inform nutrient management decisions and improve agricultural efficiency.
