PAAG Report 2016-17
This report summarises data collated by the Professional Agricultural Analysis Group (PAAG) from soil samples submitted between June 2016 and May 2017. Approximately 188,000 samples were analysed, with data available for pH, phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and magnesium (Mg) levels.
The findings highlight several consistent trends:
- Soil pH: Low pH levels were found in 16% of arable and 18% of grassland samples. Although the long-term downward trend in soil pH stabilised around 2007/08, the data suggest that liming may still be needed in some areas.
- Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K): Only 9% of samples met the target indices for both nutrients. P levels were below target in 22% of arable and 34% of grassland samples, while K levels were below target in 29% of arable and 43% of grassland samples.
- Magnesium (Mg): Low magnesium levels were observed in 16% of arable and 4% of grassland samples, indicating potential need for supplementation in some cropping systems.
While the dataset is not statistically representative of all UK soils, it provides a useful overview of broad patterns in soil nutrient status. The report supports the continued use of regular soil analysis to inform nutrient management decisions and maintain soil productivity.
