AIC welcomes plans for standardized carbon reporting but has concerns about environment targets being consulted on

2022-0161

At the request of members, AIC has welcomed proposals from BEIS for funding for government and industry to work together to streamline Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of agriculture and land use GHG emissions (carbon equivalents). In our letter to BEIS attached, we have also highlighted again our ongoing concerns about the lack of enabling policies supporting the agri-supply sector to decarbonize in a fair and equitable way.

AIC has also commented on the Defra consultation on Environment Targets (attached). In our response we have called for alignment of target setting with developing national food and farming strategies and a proportionate response to wider sustainability issues, as these are not mutually exclusive. Our focus has been on the areas of the consultation specific to agriculture – namely water targets. We have not supported these proposals due to the lack of transparency around evidence and the geographical priorities.
