A Fond Farewell to Jo Gilbertson After More Than 13 Years at AIC
AIC is saying a fond farewell to Jo Gilbertson (AIC Head of Fertiliser), who retires at the end of September, after more than 13 years with the organisation.
Jo joined AIC bringing with him a wealth of experience from roles spanning communications, public affairs, regulatory compliance and commercial management. Since joining AIC in February 2013, Jo has led policy and regulatory work on behalf of Member businesses in the fertiliser sector, representing their interests through a period of significant change for both the industry and agriculture more broadly. During this time, the fertiliser landscape has evolved considerably, influenced by changing environmental requirements, global market pressures, energy price volatility and increasing regulatory scrutiny.
Jo has played a central role in helping Members navigate these challenges, engaging extensively with Government departments, regulators and industry stakeholders to ensure that the practical realities of the fertiliser supply chain are understood and reflected in policy development. His work has helped strengthen the sector's voice in discussions on issues ranging from fertiliser regulation and nutrient management to trade policy and supply chain resilience.
In recent years, Jo has been at the forefront of AIC's work on major policy developments affecting the fertiliser sector, including the UK's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), agricultural transition policies and wider sustainability initiatives. He has worked closely with Members to interpret complex legislative proposals, provide practical guidance and ensure policymakers understand the potential impacts on fertiliser businesses and the wider agricultural supply chain.
Throughout periods of market uncertainty and global disruption, Jo has also been a strong advocate for collaboration across the supply chain. His work has helped reinforce the importance of maintaining secure and resilient supplies of essential crop nutrients, while supporting the industry's continued progress towards improved environmental performance and sustainable nutrient use.
Alongside his policy responsibilities, Jo has been a familiar and trusted presence in committee meetings and industry forums, building strong relationships with Members and stakeholders across the sector. Known for his pragmatic approach and extensive knowledge, he has consistently worked to find practical solutions to the challenges facing fertiliser businesses.
As Jo begins his well-earned retirement, we thank him for his significant contribution to AIC, its Members and the wider fertiliser industry. His dedication, professionalism and commitment to representing the sector have left a lasting legacy, and he will be greatly missed by colleagues, Members and stakeholders alike. We wish him every happiness and success in the years ahead.
Harriet Trewin joins AIC
Since July, Harriet Trewin PhD has joined AIC as Jo’s successor.
