Webinar: Understanding TFA in UK Surface Waters

Hosted by Fidra and the University of York, AIC Members are invited to join an upcoming webinar exploring new research into trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) contamination in UK surface waters. This session will present the most comprehensive assessment to date of TFA levels in rivers across the country.

TFA is a lesser-known but highly persistent and mobile PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance), formed through the breakdown of chemicals used in fluorinated gases, pharmaceuticals and pesticides. It is now recognised as the most abundant PFAS in the environment. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is currently considering classifying TFA as very Persistent and very Mobile (vPvM), Persistent, Mobile and Toxic (PMT), and Reprotoxic.

This webinar will:

  • Introduce what TFA is and why it matters
  • Share findings from the newly published UK-wide research
  • Offer a chance to ask questions directly to the researchers
Speakers Include
  • Professor Alistair Boxall and Dr Jun Li, University of York
  • Professor Hans Peter Arp, Norwegian University of Science and Technology
  • Hannah Evans, Project Manager, Fidra
  • Chair: Catherine Gunby, Executive Director, Fidra
Why Attend

This webinar offers a valuable opportunity for AIC Members to deepen their understanding of emerging environmental contaminants—specifically TFA—and their implications for UK agriculture and water systems. Whether your focus is environmental policy, water quality or chemical regulation, this session will provide insights into the widespread presence of TFA in UK surface waters and the growing regulatory attention it is receiving.
