PAAG Report 2018-19

This report presents a summary of soil analysis data collated by the Professional Agricultural Analysis Group (PAAG) from samples submitted between June 2018 and May 2019. Approximately 195,000 samples were analysed, with grassland samples accounting for 65% of those identified by land use.

The findings highlight several notable trends:

  • Soil pH: Low pH levels were observed in 19% of arable and 19% of grassland samples. The average pH in arable soils has declined from around 7.0 to 6.6, suggesting that liming may be required in some areas.
  • Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K): Only 9% of samples met the target indices for both nutrients. P levels were below target in 22% of arable and 34% of grassland samples, while K levels were below target in 24% of arable and 41% of grassland samples.
  • Phosphorus above target: Found in 50% of arable and 26% of grassland samples. The mean Olsen-P value in arable soils increased to 31 mg/l, despite reduced phosphate fertiliser use, possibly due to changes in cultivation practices.
  • Magnesium (Mg): Low magnesium levels were found in 11% of arable and 3% of grassland samples, indicating potential need for supplementation in some cropping systems.

While the dataset is not statistically representative of all UK soils, it provides a useful overview of broad patterns in soil nutrient status. The report supports the continued use of regular soil analysis to inform nutrient management decisions and maintain soil productivity.
