FEFAC publishes its Feed and Food Report 2024

The European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation (FEFAC) publishes its Feed and Food Report 2024. This publication presents key data from 2023, covering areas such as compound feed production, feed material usage, industry turnover, and statistics on meat production and consumption.

The Feed & Food Report 2024 offers a comprehensive overview of the economic trends shaping the European feed sector, highlighting the industry’s vital role within the EU feed and food supply chain and its contribution to the livestock and aquaculture economies.

Key Highlights
  • Compound Feed Production: In 2023, the EU produced 146.9 million tonnes of compound feed, a slight decrease of 0.22% from 2022. This decline was mainly in the pig sector, which saw a 4.1% drop due to African Swine Fever (ASF). Conversely, the poultry sector increased by 2.5% despite Avian Influenza (AI).
  • Economic Impact: The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the energy crisis led to higher inflation and lower demand for animal products, affecting feed production.
  • Country-Specific Trend: France, Spain, Portugal, Slovenia, and Bulgaria managed to stabilise or increase feed production, with Spain showing the most significant increase.
  • Livestock Population: In 2023, the EU-27 livestock population declined further, with cattle numbers down 1.4%, pigs down 1.1%, and sheep and goats down 3.7% from the previous year.
