The Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC) has welcomed Stephen Morgan MP, Minister of State for Food Security, following his recent appointment to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) as part of wider Government changes.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed a number of updates across departments, with Stephen Morgan promoted to Defra where he will, we understand, take on the responsibilities of his predecessor in relation to food security and sector growth.

These changes come at a time when collaboration between Government and the agri-supply sector remains critical to addressing challenges around food security, productivity and environmental delivery.

On behalf of the UK’s agri-supply trade association, AIC Chief Executive Robert Sheasby welcomed the appointment and also recognised Dame Angela Eagle DBE MP’s contribution:

“We welcome Stephen Morgan MP to his new role and look forward to working constructively with him on the issues that matter to our Members.

I would also like to give sincere thanks to Dame Angela Eagle DBE MP for her commitment and engagement during her time at Defra. We have worked closely with her across a number of key issues, and her understanding of fertiliser-related challenges and wider agri-supply issues has been particularly valuable.”

He added:

“Continued collaboration between Government and industry will be essential to ensuring policies are practical, proportionate, and support a resilient and productive food supply chain.”

The appointment comes as Government continues to refine its approach to agricultural and environmental policy, with a focus on maintaining productivity, supporting farm businesses, and strengthening long-term resilience across the supply chain.

We look forward to the awaited news on the 25-year Farm Plan and the Government’s response to the Farm Profitability Review, as part of work towards a successful UK agri-food supply chain built on long-term planning.
