AIC Celebrates 20 Years of FIAS: Two Decades of Trusted Fertiliser Assurance
The Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC) is marking the 20th anniversary of the Fertiliser Industry Assurance Scheme (FIAS), launched in 2006 to strengthen fertiliser security, safety and traceability across the UK supply chain. Developed in response to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) concerns following safety and terrorism incidents involving fertilisers, FIAS continues to safeguard the integrity of the UK fertiliser supply chain.
Over two decades, FIAS has become a cornerstone of the UK fertiliser sector, providing a trusted, independently audited framework that supports responsible sourcing, secure storage, safe haulage and clear traceability from production to farm. Today, manufacturers, importers, merchants, hauliers and stores across the UK rely on FIAS certification to demonstrate compliance, uphold best practice and maintain confidence throughout the supply chain. Its alignment with wider government initiatives such as the Department for Transport (DfT) Earned Recognition further demonstrates the Scheme’s maturity and credibility.
To celebrate this milestone, AIC is launching a new anniversary logo as part of a wider “FIAS at 20” communications programme. This will include stakeholder reflections, case studies, digital content, a dedicated anniversary edition of the FIAS Update newsletter and a FIAS 20th Anniversary Webinar. These activities will showcase how FIAS has evolved in response to new risks, regulatory changes and industry expectations, while continuing to help businesses strengthen their operational resilience.
John Kelley, Chief Operating Officer of AIC and Managing Director of AIC Services, said:
"FIAS was created to address a critical national need, and twenty years on it remains every bit as essential. The Scheme has helped the UK fertiliser industry embed a culture of safety, security and professionalism that is recognised across the supply chain. This anniversary is an opportunity not just to reflect on what has been achieved, but to reaffirm our commitment to supporting Participants as the industry continues to evolve. My thanks go to all those, past and present, who have contributed to the Scheme’s success."
