FSA and FSS Consultations - GMO

Both consultations cover the same GMO products but are set out in slightly different formats.

FSA Consultation

This consultation references applications now made to England, Scotland and Wales, for products where an application was evaluated by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) prior to the end of the transition period.

In addition to this consultation, we have also published a joint Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) scientific opinions document, relating to the relevant nine GMOs, after the organisations carried out a quality assurance review of EFSA's risk assessments.

FSS Consultation

The consultation has been launched to get your views on the other legitimate factors (evidence supporting clear, rational and justifiable risk analysis, such as consumer interests, technical feasibility and environmental factors) of nine Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) Food and Feed regulated product applications.

The Food Standards Scotland (FSS)/Food Standard Agency (FSA) risk assessment opinions on the applications are also included and comments are welcome, separately to responses on the consultations.

We would specifically welcome comments in relation to the consultation on applications and legitimate factors of nine GMOs:

  1. Do you have any concerns on the safety of the products/events which have not been considered below with respect to the intended consumers, stakeholders or impacts?

  2. Do you have any comments or concerns on the impacts in consideration of authorising or not authorising the individual GMOs, and if in favour of authorisation, the terms on which the GMOs are authorised (as outlined in the FSS/FSA opinions)?

  3. Are there any other factors that should be considered by Ministers that have not been highlighted?

  4. Do you have any other feedback?

AIC will prepare a draft consultation response to both consultations and will share these with members though members are, of course, free to make their own submissions.

Please note that in both cases the consultation period ends on 25th January 2022.
